Audemars Piguet came back to the fair

When Audemars Piguet left SIHH in 2019 the reasoning was that it no longer needed a trade fair: it had its own boutiques, its own clients, and a waiting list that made distribution someone else's problem. For six years it held private events and showed at art fairs instead.

In April it came back, and it did not come back quietly — the stand at Watches & Wonders was a scale reconstruction of the Le Brassus manufacture, complete with façade and landscaping, sitting inside Palexpo.

What was on it

New in-house movements, and a Royal Oak collection worked over rather than reinvented: skeletonised perpetual calendars, refreshed Offshore Divers, new "Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50" pieces, malachite dials, and a Royal Oak Mini in quartz with a polished black onyx dial and brilliant-cut diamond markers.

Why the return matters more than the watches

AP's absence had become part of its positioning — the brand that did not need the industry's shop window. Coming back signals something about the market rather than about AP: when demand was uncontrollable you could afford to skip the fair, and now that it is normal again, being in the room with everybody else has value.

For buyers the practical effect is more visible product and, over time, a slightly less mythologised waiting list. Neither of those is bad news.
