Patek is quietly outrunning Rolex
Quarter on quarter, secondary market prices rose 3.0% at Patek Philippe and 1.7% at Rolex. Widen the window and the gap widens with it: since the start of 2025, pre-owned Patek prices have grown roughly 18% against about 10% for Rolex. Patek was also the biggest gainer in the most recent Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, which tracks the fifty most-traded watches by transaction value.
None of this means Rolex is weak. It means the two brands are being bought for different reasons.
The recovery is broad now
The gentle recovery that started in the summer of 2025 has stopped being a story about a handful of references. WatchCharts currently has 25 of the 35 brands it tracks in positive territory. That is a different market from 2023, when almost everything was falling and only the very top held.
Why Patek is pulling
Supply, mostly. Patek produces a small fraction of Rolex's annual output — industry estimates put it at well under a tenth — and the pieces driving the gains are the complicated ones rather than the steel sports models everybody chased in 2021. Perpetual calendars, chronographs, minute repeaters. Watches bought by people who intend to keep them.
That matters for how you read a rising index. Rolex moves on liquidity: it is the easiest thing in this market to buy, sell and trade, which keeps prices honest and volumes high. Patek moves on scarcity at the top end, which produces larger percentage gains across far fewer transactions.
What we would do
If you are buying to wear and expect to sell one day, Rolex remains the most forgiving decision in watches. If you are buying with a decade in mind, the complicated Pateks have rewarded patience for three straight years — and they are the hardest thing on this list to find at a fair number, which is generally the point at which you call someone rather than refresh a listings page.
