The biggest watch auction ever held

Phillips took $96.3 million over two days in Geneva, sold 224 of 225 lots, and set 43 world records. One watch took a tenth of it.

The Geneva Watch Auction: XXIII, held by Phillips in association with Bacs & Russo on 9 and 10 May, realised CHF 74.8 million — about US$96.3 million. That is the highest total any watch auction has ever produced. Two hundred and twenty-five lots were offered and 224 sold: 99.6% by lot, 99.9% by value, with 43 new world records and fourteen individual lots above a million dollars.

The watch

The top lot was a Patek Philippe reference 2523 made in 1953: an 18ct yellow gold two-crown world time with a polychrome cloisonné enamel dial depicting South America. One of only two known in yellow gold with that map, and last seen at public auction in 1988. It took CHF 7,961,000, or US$10,247,000 — a world record for the reference, and only the second vintage Patek Philippe ever to pass ten million dollars at public auction.

The week around it

Christie's followed on 11 and 12 May with $42.3 million, its own highest result for a various-owner watch sale. Phillips finished the first half of the year at $235 million across New York, Geneva and Hong Kong.

What it tells you, and what it does not

Be careful reading auction totals as a market index. A record set by a cloisonné 2523 says almost nothing about a 2019 Submariner. What these sales measure is the very top of the market — unique dials, documented provenance, watches that come up once in a generation — and that segment is behaving completely differently from the modern references most people own.

The honest lesson for a collector is narrower and more useful: rarity plus paperwork plus a story is what clears at a premium. Everything else clears at the market price, and the market price is set somewhere much less glamorous than a Geneva saleroom.
